No doctor can make you heal. Doctors, healers, etc. can help facilitate your healing, give you guidance and even enhance your body’s own healing capabilities but they cannot do the healing for you.
If you don’t believe that you can heal from something, you will make it harder for your body to do its job properly. Conversely, if you believe in the power of your body, you can give it the best shot at recovery.

Have you ever wondered how your immune system works? At the very basis of it, your immune system, when working properly, is designed to be able to recognize what is you and what is not you. It knows what bacteria, etc are part of your normal flora and what is not. Once it decides that something is not a part of you, it destroys it and the body then gets rid of it.
When your immune system isn’t functioning properly, the invaders can take over and you get sick. In autoimmune conditions, the body has its signals mixed up and attacks its own cells in the body.
Most often, when we think of things that can hijack the immune system, we think of environmental pollutants, heavy metals, chemicals found in our food, etc. However, stress, thoughts and emotions also affect the immune system.
Do you remember when you were in school and had to write exams? You would get stressed out, study hard, write your exam, study again, pull all nighters, etc. Finally, when you exams were finished, you’d get sick. This is because the stress decreased your immunity.
When researchers studied people with anger disorders, they found that anger and violent behaviour were linked with inflammation in their body.
The immune system’s role is to identify self and non-self. If negative emotions are regularly part of who you are, it will lead to inflammation, a compromised immune system and eventually, illness.

My daughter is currently learning to crawl. The challenge for her is...that she can only go backwards. This gets her really frustrated and she almost always starts to cry.
When she has a goal or wants to get to her toy, she will get on all fours, stare at her toy and start moving. But because she can only go backwards, she sees it getting further and further away from her. This leads to crying. My daughter is also pretty determined as she doesn’t stop trying to go after her toy until something stops her (wall, chair, table, etc.).
Watching this can be hard at first but I know that in a matter of a few short weeks, she will figure out how to crawl forwards.
In life, as in crawling, sometimes, you need to go backwards before you can go forwards. Think back to some hard times in life. Did you ever feel like you were taking 2 steps forward and 3 steps back again?
Healing is also like this. Healing is not linear. We do not always get better and better. Sometimes we get worse before we get better, other times, we get better, then worse then better again.
The pain comes from having our expectations that differ from reality. Think about it for a minute. Let’s say you broke your arm, they tell you that you will be in a cast for 8 weeks and you will probably need to do exercises after. Most people accept this. However, if you expected to be out of the cast after 1 week, you would suffer for the next 7. The suffering comes from not knowing when things will end.
So, remember the next time that you feel you are having a setback that sometimes, you first need to go backwards before you can go forwards.

Illness can show up on multiple levels (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual) and in many ways. Most often, when we think of illness, we focus on the physical but that is not enough.
I had a new patient that came in with what seemed to be a simple back pain issue from shoveling his driveway too much. He stated that he felt he pulled a muscle because he was lifting and twisting too much. While, lifting and twisting certainly play a role in injury, I always dig deeper to see if there are other factors at play.

What I discovered was that he had been stressed out at work for months. When shovelling, he was thinking about how much he hated his work and he was even hoping for some time off. Well, his body did what he asked it to do! He got injured and got some time.
