Imagine you were walking in the jungle and suddenly came across a lion.  What would happen to your body?

Your body would kick in to fight or flight mode. Your heart rate would increase to pump more blood into your body so you could fight or run away, your blood pressure increases to get more blood to your muscles, your breathing would increase to get more oxygen into your body, your muscles would tense and you would be more alert and your digestion would slow down. Fight or flight is for emergencies and your digestive system is not needed at that time. The blood to the digestive system is then shunted to other areas of your body to help you fight or get away.

How long do you think it would take to find out the outcome of your challenge with the lion?

The flight/fight syndrome is supposed to be used for short term. It’s for your protection from predators and your body's attempt to move away from pain or threat. Let's rewind to the caveman days and the encounter with a lion.  Imagine that our friend survived their encounter and found his way back home. When he went to bed and woke up again, his body would be back to normal. He’d go about his day walking around, gathering food again.

In our present day, stress is no longer only used as a short term response. Now, our stress becomes the car, our computers, traffic, kids, work, multitasking, etc. and stress is present all the time. So, a body protection system that is supposed to be used for short term is now being used for long term.  This is leading to lots of health issues seen today.

Looking back at what happens to our body during the fight and flight response, let’s see how it relates to present day signs and symptoms from our body.
  • Heart rate increases: What is one of the leading causes of death?  Heart disease
  • Blood pressure increases: How many people do you know that have blood pressure challenges?
  • Breathing increase: Rate of people suffering from asthma, allergies and other lung and breathing issues are increasing
  • Muscles tense: Most people have some sort of muscle tension in their body even if they aren’t aware of it
  • Digestion slows down:  When watching T.V., how often do you see commercials advertising digestive aids?

When a body system, in this case the fight/flight response is designed for short term and is being used long term, this over taxes our body and challenges in our health can occur.

Other common signs of stress in the body can include:
  • Not eating or eating too much
  • Feeling like you have no control
  • Needing to have too much control
  • Forgetfulness
  • Headaches
  • Lack of energy
  • Lack of focus
  • Trouble getting things done
  • Poor self-esteem
  • Short temper
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Upset stomach
  • Back pain
  • General aches and pains
  • These symptoms may also be signs of depression or anxiety, which can be caused by long-term stress.

Body Parts Are Not Separate

“In the end I find I can’t separate brain from body.  Consciousness isn’t just in the head.  Nor is it a question of mind over body.  If one takes into account the DNA directing the dance of the peptides, [the] body is the outward manifestation of the mind.” - Candace Pert, Ph.D., former chief brain biochemist, National Institute of Mental Health

When we take medication, we believe that the body functions separately.  If I have low back pain, the medication will go to my low back area and fix it.  This is not true. We now know that medications are a full body interaction which involve the liver, stomach, etc.

Illness is looking at our body separate from our life.  I can put a drug into this part and not have it affect something else.  Wellness is experiencing the connection.  The connection between your body and your life.

I had a patient who had perfect vision during the first 35 years of her life.  One day, she started to notice it was slowly getting  harder to see clearly.  When she went to the eye doctor, she was told that she was in the age range where she would need reading glasses and it’s normal.  Most people would then buy glasses and go on with their lives.  Instead, this practice member decided to search for why this was happening now.  This lead her to look at her relationship with her husband, which had been going downhill for a while.  They had stopped communicating and things were not getting any better and this was something she was not willing to see.  Because there was something she did not want to acknowledge and see, her body made it so she didn’t.  She has since separated form her husband and her eyesight has not deteriorated any further.

The body is all connected, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.  The body does not perform as a cluster of separate mechanisms instead as a cascade of events that starts with proper control by the nervous system.

The brain sends and receives messages through the spine to every cell, organ, tissue, gland, muscle and joint of the body.  The spine also provides structure and flexibility to the entire body.

When the brain and body connection become impaired, tension, disease, stress, disconnection become the filters through which we interpret and react to the world in and around us.  There is no disease that isn’t emotional and mental as well.   This malfunctioning connection in turn creates tension patterns that get anchored into our nervous system and stored into our bodies.

What Happens to Stored Events that Aren’t Experienced?

Imagine that your body is in a state of constant stress and it feels as if it’s a constant battle each day?  Your body will then only allow you to keep experiencing the signals needed for survival.

As long as you are in a protected or defended state, your body won’t release the other stored experiences.  This then, creates tension throughout your body as more and more emotions and events accumulate.

The body will compensate and adapt until it can no longer do so and then eventually, it will snap.  You’ve heard the expression of the straw that broke the camel’s back?  That how some people end up in my office.  They bend over to put their socks on and their back gives out on them.  It was not simply that one event.  Our bodies are meant to have flexibility and range of movement....putting our socks on alone should not cause that kind of pain.

People Don’t Mind Pain

Can you think of a situation in which someone could experience pain and be happy about it?  What about a mother who is about to give birth?  They are in pain and yet they know that there will be a good outcome for the pain.

I had a friend who suddenly developed a virus in her brain.  She ended up paralyzed from neck down and couldn’t feel anything.  One day, she felt excruciating pain in her toe and she was ecstatic and overjoyed.  It meant that she could feel again.

For a lighter example, have you ever been to the gym and the next day was so sore from your workout and also feeling great?

These examples show that it is not simply about the pain.  People do not mind being in pain!  People mind having pain and being fearful of it!

How Does Stress Get Stored in My Body?

11/7/2020

When a traumatic event occurs in life i.e. accident, loss of loved one, and the number of messages that our body receives is too overwhelming, we create tension to protect ourselves.

Take a car accident for instance.  When someone gets into a car accident, every single cell, tissue, organ, body part moves on impact.  All these movements are all registered in your body.  Now, because there are so many signals at one time, your body does a triage system where the most important for your survival will register first.  So, when the ambulance came to check on you, the paramedics will ask what hurts.  At that moment, they may say their head.  The brain is one of the most vital organs for survival so it would register first.  So, they are taken away to the hospital for further examination.

A week goes by after the accident and suddenly, they notice that their right knee is hurting.  It occurs to them then that their knee also hit the dashboard during the accident.  Had their body known this the entire time?  Yes, yet the knee wasn’t as critical as the brain for survival so the body ignored it until a later time.

When your body has too many signals to handle, it will choose what you need in the moment for survival.  This can also occur for cases of emotional or mental trauma.  Certain feelings will be experienced first that are needed the most to defend yourself i.e. anger and then later, other emotions may creep in.  The emotions that are developed are for moving away from things. i.e. danger, fear.

Increasing Your Range of Emotion

Imagine that when you were 6 years old, I gave you a box of 6 crayons.  Whenever you coloured, you would only see the world through those crayons.  Let’s say for you 7th birthday, I gave you a box of 64.  You now have a whole new world.  If you currently respond to the world in 2 emotions, anger and fear, whenever something happened to you, you could only respond with anger and fear.

Now, what if we gave you angry, irritated, annoyed and bothered?  Now, you can choose any of these emotions to experience your world.  On the other side, instead of good, how about exceptional, outstanding, joy, gratitude, benevolence?  The more range of emotion you can in your body, the more range of motion you have.  Emotion equals motion.
