We Don’t See Ourselves Clearly

3/5/2021

I am currently enrolled in a business course. One of the assignments is to ask a few trusted individuals what are your 3 greatest strengths, superpowers or abilities.

This was not an easy task. Firstly, I am not good at taking compliments. So, I wasn’t looking forward to hearing back from people.

Secondly, I don’t like asking for things from others.

I was not prepared for their responses. They made me look cool. I thought, "Wow, I'd like to meet this person."

Lesson: I do not see myself clearly.

Here is some of what was said:

  • The ability to flow forward.  The way you react to obstacles, change and focus on listening and finding solutions.
  • The ability to trust yourself.  You are clear on what comes to you, and as a patient and friend, I feel that from you and it brings me comfort.
  • Willingness to put yourself out there.  You step outside your comfort zone regularly to grow and you refuse to be stuck.
  • You have an innate wisdom that helps others see things in a more positive light.
  • You are loyal in your commitment to your family and the people you serve in your community.
  • You have the ability to connect with others and bring joy and light into their lives.
  • Superpower: To restore hope and recreate a sense of stability and balance for clients who are experiencing a crisis situation or who require a solid base from which  to continue their healing journey.
  • Strength: Your approach to client care is embedded in a practice of non judgmental /caring / compassionate interaction which facilitates personal growth and well being.
  • Quality: Your capacity to actively listen and create a trusting healing space for clients to openly speak and release their deep inner emotions without fear
  • You're a gifted body translator.
  • You hold space like a superhero.
  • You have a knowing of which questions to ask to help someone navigate a shift.
  • You're sweet but potent which gives you the ability to coax out the big feels without making someone feel vulnerable.

2 Upsets, 1 Sad and 10 Funnies

I often put my son down to sleep at night.

I was talking to him as he was getting ready for bed one night this week and I asked him about his day.

Here’s what happened:

Me: How was your day, buddy?

Him: I had a bad day.

Me: How come?

Him: I had 2 upsets and 1 sad.

Me: Pause.

Me: How many “happy’s” did you have?

Him: I had 10 funnies.

Me: Wow, 10 funnies! Then you had a good day, didn’t you?

Him: Ya Momma, I did.

Me: Goodnight, buddy.

Your perception changes with what you focus on. Choose to focus on what’s working and what’s going right in your life.

Also, finish each day by finding something that you are grateful for and wake up each morning and find 1 thing that you are grateful for.

Remember the Kindest Version

2/19/2021

Let’s face it, we have all had unpleasant experiences in our lives.  Most often, they involve other people.

I’m repeatedly asked, what is the best way to move past a hurt that you’ve experienced?

What I have found is to remember the kindest version of what happened to you.

A few months ago, I had a disagreement with some family members. They had their version of what happened and I had mine. So, how did I move forward?

I chose to look back on the conversation to find the positives:
  • We were able to have a conversation and express our opinions
  • Each person wanted to look out for their best interests and being selfish can be a good thing
  • There is a freedom that comes from letting go of expectations
  • It made me do some self exploration of the role I played
  • I had to confront my uncomfortable emotions and find the root of where they stemmed

When you can look back on an event and see what you can learn, it will be stored differently in your body and your nervous system then if you simply harbored the emotions that you experienced.

Feel and experience your emotions, then go back and find the opportunities for growth.

Take a look back on the last time someone upset you. What was said and what was exactly done?

Take inventory of what you have learned. Take action to make changes if necessary and remember the best possible outcome of an event.

We are all doing our best. If everyone experienced the same situations and circumstances that you did, perhaps they would have empathy and understanding. Differences of opinions happen because others have not walked in your shoes.

Healing is Being Situated in Love

2/13/2021

Picture
One of my patients sent me the following teaching on healing. It resonated with me and is what I strive to learn and teach.

Healing is a journey, not a destination.

When we go towards and lean into the pain, is truly when we start to heal it. In society, we are taught to run away from the pain or to get rid of it. People take medication so they don't feel their pain or have surgery to cut it out. Now, there is definitely a time and place for medication and surgery, I'm not saying there isn't. What I do advocate for is to learn from your pain. Step into it and see what your body is trying to tell you.

When I was in labour with my 2nd child and the contractions were intensifying, I did not think that I could go on without medication. My doula then said to me: "What if you stop fighting the pain and embrace it?" That made a world of difference. Instead of wishing the contractions away, I welcomed them because I would get to meet my baby sooner. Each contraction symbolized my body hugging and guiding my baby out to meet me. The pain, though still intense, decreased significantly and allowed me to birth naturally, without medications or any medical intervention, which was my desire.

Welcome the pain and embrace it as a part of yourself that needs healing.

Richard Rohr's Daily Meditation

From the Center for Action and Contemplation

Healing is being situated in love. Healing is not just the courage to love, but to be loved. It is the courage to want to be happy not just for others, but for ourselves as well. It is interrogating our bodies as an artifact of accumulated traumas and doing the work of processing that trauma by developing the capacity to notice and be with our pain. If we are to heal, then we must allow our awareness to settle into and integrate with the pain and discomfort that has been habitually avoided. We cannot medicate the pain away. We embrace it, and in so doing establish a new relationship with the experience. We must see that there is something that must be befriended. This is the true nature of our experience, and in finally approaching this experience we contact basic sanity. . . .

Healing is movement and work toward wholeness. Healing is never a definite location but something in process. It is the basic ordinary work of staying engaged with our own hurt and limitations. Healing does not mean forgiveness either, though it is a result of it. Healing is knowing our woundedness; it is developing an intimacy with the ways in which we suffer. Healing is learning to love the wound because love draws us into relationship with it instead of avoiding feeling the discomfort.

Healing means we are holding the space for our woundedness and allowing it to open our hearts to the reality that we are not the only people who are hurt, lonely, angry, or frustrated. We must also release the habitual aggression that characterizes our avoidance of trauma or any discomfort. My goal is to befriend my pain, to relate to it intimately as a means to end the suffering of desperately trying to avoid it. Opening our hearts to woundedness helps us to understand that everyone else around us carries around the same woundedness. . . .

Perhaps what I have come to understand, finally, is that somehow I have become the one I have always wanted. This is why I do the things that I do. There is a fierce love that wakes me up every morning, that makes me tell my stories, refuses to let me apologize for my being here, blesses me with the capacity to be silent, alone, and grieving when I most need to be. You have to understand that this is what I mean when I say healing.

May all beings be seen, held kindly, and loved. May we all one day surrender to the weight of being healed.

Closing the Loop

2/6/2021

Picture

I was listening to a coach and mentor of mine and she was talking about a concept called “closing the loop.” In your brain, you have an open and close loop.  When you expect something, your brain’s loop is on open until you complete it.

For instance, if I told you that I got you a gift, your brain would stay on the "open" mode until you received your present and then it would be "closed."

Have you ever had the experience where you couldn’t remember the name of someone and then after some time, your brain finally remembered? You had opened a loop when you couldn’t think of the name and your brain continued to search until it found the name and could close the loop.

This occurs also when you’re completing tasks, reading e-mails, asking questions, etc.

When my coach was describing this concept, a light bulb went off in my head, I have a lot of loops open! Even worse, I am not very good at closing loops.

I need to close the loop on things, if a patient sends an email, I need to reply and keep them posted.

When you respond and close a loop, you allow people to move on. Allow people to close the loop in their brain! It will free up their brain to do other things. The same applies to you and your brain.

Do Meditation Guru's Have Young Children? I think not.

1/29/2021

Picture

My guess is that meditation guru's and masters do not have young children.

I've been doing some personal development reading and several authors talk about the benefits of doing early morning meditations.

I am naturally a morning person, so waking up at 5 am isn't a problem for me. However, my toddler also wakes up at 5 am.

This past week, I decided to do a 10 minute guided meditation when I woke up. 2 minutes into my meditation, my toddler came to sit on my lap. I ignored her and continued to meditate. She did not like that and got up and tried to climb on my back for a piggy back ride. I still did not react so she got off. She then went to the radio and turned it up FULL VOLUME. This of course did interrupt my meditation as I could no longer hear it.

I turned off the radio and went back to my meditation. My daughter left the room and I thought that I could finish the last couple minutes in peace. No, that was not the case. My daughter decided to climb upstairs to her sleeping brother's room and knock on the door until he woke up.

Just as my 10 minute meditation finished, my son was crying, having just been woken up from his sleep and my toddler was running around and laughing.

My lessons?
  • Meditation, though not as efficient, nor ideal, is possible with distractions.
  • You do you.
  • Accept what is. One day, life won't be like this and you will remember these days fondly.
  • Gratitude for when I do get to meditate in silence.
  • Create an attitude of: whatever it takes, when it comes to your goals.
  • Laugh. It's important to remind yourself how funny things are as they are happening.

28 Day Challenge Completion

1/23/2021

Picture
I did it! I reached by goal and completed what I set out to do.

When a new 28 day lockdown was first announced, I decided that I was going to come out of it stronger than when I went in. I have no control over the actual lockdown but what was in my control was how I would feel during it.

I set out to lose some of the weight that I gained during the pandemic, decrease some negativity in my life, and get back to some of the things that I  know are good for me such as meditation, writing in my journal and movement.

More importantly, I wanted to see the person I would become if I completed this challenge. I knew that I would be different than when I started it. What was more important than my goals was how I would change to achieve them along the way.

The goals were something to focus on while I was becoming more of who I really am.

So, who am I now?

Not only am I lighter physically, but emotionally, mentally, and spiritually as well.

At my next workshop on Feb 15 at 8 pm, I will be talking about some of the things that I did during my challenge but here is a summary:

For my diet, I did intermittent fasting where I ate three meals a day between the hours of 8 am - 5 pm.  I stopped eating at 5 pm and eliminated snacks and junk food. I also used some supplements for detoxification, neuro-optimization chiropractic care and the infrared sauna. If you do not have access to an infrared sauna, you can still do the challenge or come into our office to use ours.

I woke up every morning and I meditated. If I had time, I would journal and if not I wouldn’t I would at night.

I stopped watching the news and I disconnected from some people that were bringing negatively and drama into my life. I also did not go on social media before noon, except if I had to do something specifically for work.

I’m feeling more energized, less weighed down, happier and more connected to who I really a.m. Even my patients have noticed! For those that asked, I lost almost 10 pounds!

I encouraged you to join me. My goal was to come out stronger from the lockdown and when I went in and I achieved my goal. Because we are still in lockdown I plan to extend and continue to do what I’m doing with some slight modifications.

If you need help or would like to join me, let me know how I can support you.

Toxic People = Toxic Life

1/15/2021

Picture

We are aware of many ways that toxins can enter our bodies. Whether it's pollution from the environment, chemicals in our food or even mold in the house.

One source of toxins that we aren't usually aware of is that coming from toxic people. Toxic people bring negative emotions, chaos and drama into your life.

While you may not be able to stop talking to all of them, you can try to limit your contact.

Negative emotions like anger and resentment causes your body to react with stress which in turn decreased your immune system.

They also rob joy from your life. When you spend time thinking about your past experiences, it keeps you from enjoying the present moment.

So, what do you do?

Go through your contacts and decide if they bring positive or negative energy into your life. Now, we all have up and down times in our lives and can't be happy 100% of the time. We want an average experience to be on the positive side.

Observe your body because they it will react right away as you think of the different people in your life.

If they don't add to your life, they are either neutral or they take away from it.

Limit your interaction and contact or even eliminate those that take away from your life force. Spend time with those that add to it.

People can also switch categories. It's up to you to determine how much energy you have and want to give to the relationship.

Instead, focus on yourself and the things that bring you joy.

What are you passionate about?

What would you wake up early for?

Remember where your focus goes, your energy flows.

If you are currently trying to heal from a chronic medical condition such as lyme or an autoimmune disorder, it is especially important to keep what energy you have for healing.

Focus On Who You Are Becoming

1/9/2021

Picture

One of my coaches, told me last week, focus on who you are becoming with respect to your goals.

I have been setting goals for many years now. Some I achieve and others, I don’t. Either way, I find myself waiting for the day that I achieve my goal and I sometimes forget to focus on the process. This is difficult because we spend a lot more time in the process than at the end goal.

Instead of focusing on a number, i.e. when I lose 10 pounds, focus on the person that you are becoming in the process. In order to lose 10 pounds, who would you need to be? Would you need to be someone that is mindful of what they eat? Would you need to be someone who exercises? Would you need to stop emotional eating? The answer for me would be yes.

If you owned a business and you needed to have more clients than you have right now, who do you need to be? Would you need to be someone who focused on marketing and making new connections? Would you need to practice your craft in a different way? Would you need new procedures?

Whatever your goal, you will be a different person once you reach it then when you started. Focus on who you will become in the process. Get excited about the little changes.

Remember it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey and who you are becoming.

It's Not What You Are Eating, It's What's Eating You

1/2/2021

I was reading an article that reported almost 50% of people gained weight during the pandemic. The survey stated there were many factors including people being more sedentary in nature and stress: financial, emotional, physical, mental, health, etc.

I fell into the 50% that gained weight which is why I'm doing to do a 28 day cleanse.

Why you eat is more important than what you eat

The reasons behind why you are eating will determine what you eat.

Have you ever examined what triggers you to eat?

Some questions to ask yourself:
  • Why are I eating?
    • Am I hungry?
    • Am I bored?
    • Is it because I’m stressed in some way?
  • What am I eating?
    • Something healthy?
    • Junk food?
  • If I put off this meal for 1 hour, how would I feel?
  • What would I do if someone took this food away from me right now?

Your reactions will tell you why you are really eating. If you are not attached to something emotionally, it would be easy to put off your meal for an hour. If someone took your meal away, and you want to bite their head off, there's probably an emotional component.

When it comes to stress and life, we often take ourselves too seriously.

An incident happened a few weeks ago where a family member said something that upset me. This one thought that one person said caused me to change my state for a few hours.

Of all the thoughts that my mind has in a day, I chose to focus on this one.

So, how did I stop my mind?

I took a bigger view on things. This was only one thought. One out of the many that I have in a minute, hour, or day. It would be like comparing one snowflake on the car windshield to the rest. Such a small thing.

If I expand out further, I have this one thought and there are the thoughts of the people in my family, neighbourhood, city, province, country, world, solar system, galaxy...the entire cosmos.

When I compare my one thought to that of the entire cosmos, I have to laugh at my mind, move on and enjoy the rest of my day.

I am hosting a free webinar called “It’s not what you’re eating, it’s what’s eating you.” on Monday, Jan 11 at 8 pm. Send me an email: info@biohealottawa.com to register.
