Common Aging Myths

A few weeks ago, our office exhibited at the 55 plus show in Ottawa and I had the joy of meeting some of the attendees.  Some people talked about their health concerns while others asked questions on what they can do to maintain their healthy bodies as they get older.

Here are some common myths that I heard about health
  • “I am old, I don’t want to do anything about my pain because it’s supposed to hurt at this age.”
    • This is not true.  It does not have to hurt!  Many people stay healthy throughout their life.  Make health and wellness a priority in your life!  Even if you have pain in one area of your body, it does not have to keep you from being active.
    • For inspiration, here is an 80 year old dancer competing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjHnWz3EyHs) and a 95 year runner (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iD7D8BY2d1c).
  • “I stopped exercising because I was in pain.”
    • If you don’t use it, you lose it.  Muscles lose their strength as you stop using them.  Inactivity leads to immobility.   If you are in pain, get a professional to supervise you while you exercise.  They can give you proper exercises and watch your form and technique.  If you are unable to move a part of your body because of pain, they can give you alternate exercises.  The gym that I belong to has a masters class.  http://www.humantwopointzero.com/
  • “I don’t need help.”
    • If you are experiencing pain or discomfort seek professional help and from a few different opinions as well.  If you keep waiting or ignore it, it could get worse.  Take care of aches and pains in a timely manner so you can get back to being active sooner
  • “I’m old, I don’t need to watch my diet.”
    • Your body uses the food that you put in it to make up your new cells.  You will recover and heal faster if your body is made up of fresh salads versus fast food.  Ever wonder why someone recovers from the flu or illness faster than another?  While there are many factors, the food you eat plays a vital role in your immune system and your body’s ability to heal.
  • “I don’t want to do it on my own.”
    • Go exercise with a group of friends or join a seniors class to make new ones.  Try a new activity.  Keep young by continuous learning.  When you learn something new, the neurons in your brain pick up new firing patterns.  Keep your mind flexible along with your body.
Most importantly, have fun.  This is the time where all the hard work you’ve  been doing has paid off and it’s time to enjoy yourself.
