In the past several weeks, I've had patients ask me what they can add to their oral health routine if they are experiencing bad breath, cavities or stains on their teeth.
I recommend the Ayurvedic medicine technique of oil pulling.
Oil pulling involves swishing oil around your mouth for 15-20 minutes.
You can use any vegetable oil. My favourite is extra virgin coconut oil. A reminder that coconut oil is solid at room temperature but will melt and turn liquid when you put it in your mouth.
In order to oil pull, you put a tablespoon of oil in your mouth, then swish it around for 15–20 minutes.
It is reported that the main benefit of doing this is that it reduces the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth.
Many varieties of bacteria exist in your mouth at any given time. This is true all over your body. Some bacteria are friendly, some are synergistic (work together) and others are harmful.
The bacteria in your mouth create plaque. While having some plaque on your teeth is perfectly normal, if it gets out of hand, it can cause various problems, including bad breath, gum inflammation, gingivitis and cavities.
The way oil pulling works is simple — when you swish the oil around your mouth, the bacteria get swept away and dissolve in the liquid oil.
It is very important that you spit out the oil when you are done swishing. DO NOT SWALLOW it.
Give oil pulling a try for 2 weeks and see what you noticed.
