Stress impacts your immune system
According to Bruce Lipton, when your body is in stress mode, your adrenals release hormones and these adrenal hormones directly repress the action of your immune system. This is in order to conserve energy for your ‘emergency’ system.
The stress hormones are so effective at decreasing the body’s immunity that when a patient undergoes an organ transplant, they are given the same hormones so they do not reject the new tissues.
When people get stressed out or after they’ve undergone a stressful period in their life, their immune system is weakened and their body is less able to fight and thus, they become sick or end up with a disease.
How stress affects thinking
The fight and flight system stimulates the hindbrain or reptilian brain. It is the most ancient part of the brain and it is considered to make up the entire brain in reptiles. It monitors our functions needed for our basic survival such as breathing, heartbeat and blood pressure.
The forebrain is considered the most evolved part of our brain and is what is said to distinguish humans versus the rest of the animal kingdom. This area is responsible for complex information such as critical thinking, logic and reasoning.
In an emergency, the faster we can process information about our surroundings and ourselves, the better chance we have of survival. The hindbrain receives information quicker than the forebrain so the blood vessels get contracted in the forebrain so that more blood can be sent to the hindbrain. This diminished blood supply leads to a decrease of conscious awareness and reduced intelligence.
